Cooper Bussmann is a wholly owned division of Cooper Industries, Inc (NYSE: CBE) and is headquartered in St. Louis, Missouri. With a more than 90-year history of innovation, the company has set the standard for circuit protection in the global market. Cooper Bussmann manufactures a wide variety of North American and European-styled fuses for the electrical, electronics and transportation industries, plus inductors and transformers for power quality in electronic applications. Cooper Bussmann also offers engineering, testing and training services focused on downtime reduction, workplace safety and Code compliance.
History of Cooper Industries
Cooper Industries was launched in 1833 by brothers Charles and Elias Cooper. The business started as a foundry situated in Mt. Vernon, Ohio, and was originally called the C&E Cooper Business. Cooper's initial item offerings consisted of plows, hog ranges, troughs and pots. By the mid-nineteenth century, Cooper Industries changed its focus to making steam engines in hopes of leveraging the country's increasing desire for rail transportation. It was during this time that the business created Cooper Grip Engine, a development that is credited for aiding to spur our nation's move from an agrarian to a commercial culture.
As using steam power declined in the late 1800's, Cooper again moved its emphasis to gas engine technology. By the 20th century, Cooper Industries had come to be the national innovator in pipeline compression engines. This period was also highlighted by the historic merger with Bessemer Gas Engine Business, which is still referenced to this day in Cooper's stock sign (CBE).
In the 1940's, Cooper played an integral part in the U.S. WWII initiative, supplying engine components that powered most of the ships in the Navy's minesweeper fleet, and also the popular Liberty Ships, which carried 75% of the payload made use of by Allied armed forces. After the war, Cooper once more embarked on an initiative to expand itself in a shifting world economy. Cooper expanded its product offering to electrical products, electric devices, automotive parts, tools and hardware.
