Stamping presses are often used to produce
automotive body panels. In single and double action presses, there is usually a need to
draw the metal at a slow speed to prevent undue stress or tearing of the metal. It is
also desirable to maintain a fast, press cycle time. This can be accomplished using an
eddy current clutch and braking system where the speed profile can be controlled
throughout the press stroke.
Stamping presses have an AC or DC motor that runs a large flywheel at a fixed speed. The press
gearing and ram are connected to the flywheel through a variable eddy current
clutch/brake. Precisely controlling the amount of current in the clutch or brake coils
sets the speed of the press ram. Increasing the current in the clutch coils causes the
press to run faster, and increasing the current in the brake coils slows the press. The
clutch & brake coils are never on at the same time.
Dynamatic Corporation produced the majority of the clutch/brake assemblies used on presses.
Stamping plants are familiar with these mechanical workhorses and are adept in maintenance
and rebuilding procedures. The failing point on these older systems has been the care and
maintenance of the eddy current controller. Parts for the controller are generally expensive,
and difficult to locate. Maintaining the controller requires extensive training for service personnel.
The Galco CS1000 Closed Loop Clutch Brake Exciter is a PC-based system designed to control
the speed of eddy current presses. The existing rotating clutch/brake assembly can be
precisely controlled with this system. The CS1000 is designed to fit in the same space as
the Dynamatic unit and the wiring is virtually the same. Its a drop-in replacement
for defective, older units and changeover can be done with minimum downtime.
Existing feedback devices on the press (ratiometric resolver and AC tachometer) are used
in the new system. All setup and adjustment is done graphically. No more looking up
parameters, figuring out what they do and trial-and-error adjustment. Graphic status
indicators, error indicators, performance indicators, and a date-stamped fault log are
standard. This makes troubleshooting easier for maintenance personnel. Rounding out the
features on the CS1000 is an extremely robust power section that ensures maximum MTBF,
plus an electronic current overload function that protects the clutch and the brake. |
