A vortex tube is a device that separates compressed air into both cold and hot air streams. This is done without any moving parts, making the vortex tube a valuable tool for industrial applications as an inexpensive cooling unit.
Because compressed air is already often available in manufacturing settings, using a vortex tube for spot cooling on machines is the most efficient option in many cases. Cutting machinery like lathes and mills are frequent applications cooled by vortex tubes, both for cooling and because the cold air blast removes chips and dust particles from the machine.
With just 100psi of compressed air, and a control valve at the hot end adjusting air flow, temperatures as low as -46°C and as high as 127°C are possible.
