What is a laser cutter
Laser cutter machines use powerful laser optics to cut, burn, or melt material in a desired pattern or shape. The laser is positioned above the material and moves around the surface cutting the material in the desired shape. The laser is controlled by CNC (computer numerical control) allowing users to input dimensions and measurements for the cut. Laser cutters also provide such a precise cut that very little finalizing work is required after the cut has taken place.
Types of Laser Cutters
The three main types of laser cutters are moving material machines, flying optics machines, and hybrid configuration machines.
  • Moving material machine:types of laser cutters This type of laser cutter machine has the laser fasten in one stationary location while the material below moves to cut the desired pattern. This is a slower option for laser cutting.
  • Flying optics machine: This type of laser cutter machine fastens the material in one location while the laser moves in order to cut the material. The laser can move on an x and y axis allowing this to be the faster option for laser cutting.
  • Hybrid configuration machine: This type of laser cutter machine combines the aspect of moving material machines and flying optics machines. Hybrid configuration machines allow movement of both the material and the laser allowing the two to work together on cutting material.
