high electrical and mechanical performance verified using certified test procedures
supported by the world-wide ABB network
New design from 7.5 to 100 HP
New styling
harmonized from 7.5 to 100 HP :- grey casing with ABB baseline in red
co-ordinated dimensions :- for easier panel configuration
New technology
new high-resistance, environmentally friendly material :- improved shock resistance ; contains no phosphorus or and halogenated components
terminals protected against direct contact :- high safety
performance optimized with new design :- improved short-circuit capability- high electrical and mechanical durability
Compact design for 3-pole and 4-pole versions
Both have the same styling, using the same materials, and have the same mechanical and electrical design.
3-pole : 11 ratings from 7.5 to 100 HP
4-pole : 6 ratings from 25 to 125 A
A harmonious and complete series.
Accessories common to the whole series
One model (at most two) of each type of accessory fits all the "A" series contactors.
Easy to integrate with your own design
Extremely compact
whether for high or low ratings, all the contactors are extremely compact:- 236 cm3 for a power rating of 15 HPB with the A16 contactor: a record!- 90 x 148 mm front for a 100 HP rated contactor (3-pole)Without compromise to safety or performance.
lower coil consumption:- temperature rise is limited enabling designers to increase the population density of components thus reducing cabinet dimensions Control transformers can also be reduced in size for further savings.
Unrestricted benefits
an "A" series contactor can directly replace another model
the new contactors keep the advantage of fast fixing on EN rails
excellent insulation between power and control circuits (conforming to the strictest standards)
A design valid world-wide
UL and CSA approved
dual frequency coils (50 Hz and 60 Hz) for standard voltages
technology complies with present and future voltage standards
compliance with the latest international standards
recyclable plastic materials, phosphorus- and halogen-free
cadmium-free contacts
supported by the world-wide ABB network
Easy to integrate accessories
one range for all the "A" series contactors
auxiliary contact blocks available in front - or side-mounted versions
Designed for easy and safe installation
Easy installation of accessories
clip-on accessories
surge suppressors connected when clipped-on
easy change of accessories, unlocking by lever
Clear, legible markings
On the box as well as on the product:
easy identification, fast selection and simplified verification
increased safety from the warehouse up to the workshop
Engineered for fast connection...
Combining all these benefits:
all terminal screws are on the front for power and control
one type of screw pozidriv No.2 (for A9 to A40)
terminals delivered in open position with captive screws
cable guides for faster conductor insertion
coil terminals on the wiring side:
- two terminals A1 and A2, on the upper side
- one terminal A2 repeated on the lower side
...with safety in mind
all terminals are marked on the front
function confirmed on auxiliary contact blocks (NO or NC)
terminal technology optimized for good cable grip
live parts protected against direct touch
closed or open state visible from the front
One range of high-performance accessories
Rational and versatile
every function is multiple-choice
for most functions, one or two types of accessories are sufficient for all the contactors in the "A" series
Choice of auxiliary contact
front - or side-mounted
each model fits all the contactors in the "A" series
Contact quality ensures performance
Auxiliary contacts benefit from ABB wiping contact technology:
reliability even for low-level signals (standard 5mA, 17V)
high thermal current
Open option interlocking
mechanical interlocking with integrated electrical interlocking for the whole series
mechanical-only interlock available as an option (from A9 to A40)
interlocking possible between contactors with different ratings
A new degree of reliability
Built-in durability
new shock-resistant material
high ratings even at 600 V
1000 V insulation voltage (Ui)
high tracking performance
high mechanical durability (contactor successfully tested for over 20 million operations)
high electrical durability
This contactor has successfully passed a Type 2 (IEC 947-4-1) short-circuit test at 50 kA, protected with fuses.
A further 1000 V dielectric test proved its main characteristics remained intact, enabling on-going normal use.
improved insulation between control and power circuits
all live parts are protected against direct touch
Proven again and again
every model of contactor and type of accessory has been extensively tested in our certified laboratories (LOVAG, UL)
test procedures are those approved by UL and LOVAG (ASEFA, ...)
our test requirements are equal to or higher than the standards
