A phase rotation tester is a test instrument that shows the direction a 3-phase motor will rotate when connected to its power source.
Phase rotation testers have three leads to connect to the input power supply. A small display identifies each lead - L1, L2, or L3 - and the direction the motor will rotate if it is connected the same way.
The tester helps ensure correct installation before a motor is installed, preventing damage in the event that the motor rotates in the wrong direction. If the tester reads unwanted motor direction, simply swap two leads, test rotation, and connect the motor in that orientation.
